Start to finish utility shed build on-site - 16 November 2026
Gain hands-on carpentry experience and help build a lasting community asset in this practical workshop led by professional shed builder Tennyson Tappan. Designed for aspiring builders and DIY enthusiasts alike, the course takes you through the full process of small structure development. We'll cover everything from initial design principles and material selection to ground preparation, pre-fabricated panel assembly, framing, door installation, roofing, and weatherproofing. Working in both indoor workshop spaces and outdoor assembly areas, participants will develop confidence using essential carpentry construction tools while mastering modern modular techniques that make building construction efficient and precise.
The class will run for 7 days from noon to 6PM(weekdays) and from 10AM-5PM on Saturday and Sunday as we construct and assemble the shed. Students should expect to take part at least an hour every day in order to get exposure to all of the steps. Friday through the weekend days will be especially critical as we will be completing the build and there will be many crucial steps during assembly.
Over the course of the class, students will collaboratively construct a complete 8'x8' utility shed to be put into service at the West Bethel Makerspace, with all building materials generously provided by local donors. You will learn the critical details of ground support, structural integrity, squaring, sheathing, and exterior sealing as each section comes together. By the time the final trim is installed, you will not only have contributed directly to a community asset at our makerspace, but you will also walk away with the practical knowledge and skills required to plan and tackle your own outbuilding projects.
Wear clothing suitable for both indoor and outdoor work in weather. Closed-toe shoes and eye protection are required. Ear protection and gloves recommended.
